Though clearly important in lakes, the role of phosphorus has been largely ignored in the ocean. The cyanobacteria from the Baltic Sea, both the bloom-forming species such as Nodularia spumigena (Fewer et al., 2013; Niedermeyer et al., 2014) and the cyanobacterial species that are rarely The 20 active strains were then tested against one strain of each of three bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena circinalis and Nodularia spumigena. Fourteen of the strains active against green algae killed one or more of the bloom-forming strains, the effects being particularly strong with three Fischerella strains. Nodularia spumigena is a filamentous diazotrophic cyanobacterium that dominates the annual late summer cyanobacteria! blooms in the Baltic Sea. But N. spumigena also is common in brackish water bodies worldwide, suggesting special adaptation allowing it to thrive at moderate salinities.

aastal kirjutati. [1] Summary 11 Nodularia is a cyanobacteria genus that is usually found in warm, brackish or saline lakes and estuaries. In brackish desert lakes it can form dense blooms. Some species of Nodularia are associated with benthic environments, but the most common toxin-forming species, Nodularia spumigena, is planktonic. Nodularia spumigena is a bloom-forming, filamentous and N 2-fixing cyanobacterium from the Nostocales order.
